Killing Science in Canada

Two years ago, the Harper Government quietly defenestrated pure science research in Canada. A few months ago, the Harper Government quietly defenestrated pure health researchin Canada. Why?

Some strategy may seem valid upon first inspection, but as we look at how science drives the modern economy, we see that what Prime Minister Stephen Harper has done will have many negative impacts on Canada and our economy. A poor idea, with poor results.

Canada has benefited greatly from science. Our country enjoys the highest scientific literacy rate in the world. The results of this can be seen in our high tech science sectors and many historical innovations.

Pure research in Canada enabled scientists to freely ask “why?”. Well, not that free, scientists first apply for research grants and viable research is funded. Canada has a very long, diverse, proud and distinguished science history. When scientists were finished asking “why?”, results were openly published and openly communicated to other scientists, then they moved on to their next “why?”.

Providing answers to questions built a library of knowledge, some of which launched modern industries. Yes, industry needs science and innovation to remain competitive, ergo profitable. In the past, companies went “shopping for science”, when it suited them to make new markets, or out-innovate the competition. If companies didn't find the science they needed, a partnership with academia was formed to get the solution. It's a flexible system. If corporations needed it, they paid for it. Letting millions of scientists ask “why?”, freely, has led to our modern society.

Imagine, back in the day, Galileo partnering with the Catholic Church for research on astronomy and getting funded to deliver unwanted results?

Under Stephen Harper Government, pure science research has been eliminated. No more “why?”. Now our science research must have private and public cooperation, to be funded. These private-public partnerships have already been demonstrated to be less effective and more costly, in Ontario. Leveraging this failed model into Canadian science is equally misinformed.

Is it wise to limit a scientists ability to ask “why?” to only those questions corporations are interested in? Are corporations better at asking “why?”. Is creating this complex relationship to ask "why?"the most efficient means of research? A wrong question takes time to discover the question is invalid, forcing two groups to fail doesn't seem wise.

Many top-gun researchers were attracted to Canada, since we were a global leader in science research. Now they are saying they will leave Canada to conduct their future pure research. When the smart people leave, there is good reason. Too many "restrictions" on what can now be studied, in Canada. New and upcoming researchers are now scratching Canada off their list of places to innovate.

What is the long term impact on our economy of losing the best and brightest? When top-gun scientists say they are leaving Canada, because of Stephen Harper Government, shouldn't we be asking our next Canadian Government how we can fix this, quickly?

Since some corporations don't have expertise in research science, and in some cases are completely scientifically illiterate, their inability to identify a viable opportunity could end an excellent idea before it even begins. Can we trust “business zombies” to see the next trillion dollar idea? I say no, since our Stephen Harper Government is ignoring the next generation of future market opportunities.

With a $300 trillion market in green energy and economy leaving Canada behind, it's evident that we need to accelerate green innovation, delivering jobs and a more secure future.

When China ignored steam engine science, it put them 100 years behind those that allowed science to freely innovate; answering questions and enabling new industry with new solutions. Is Stephen Harper the best leadership to be diddling around with pure science and health research? No way. Investing and developing future technology strategy isn't easy and our current Government isn't showing any results.

But, as with many other conservative policies, one must look at what isn't discussed to get a better idea of what is happening, and what the actual final results will be. Sometimes a change may be sold with one goal, but enable other poor policy results. With a limited pool of resources, for research partnerships, larger economics will be given “first in line” treatment. With big oil scrambling, do or die, to lower the production cost of tarsands, it seems Stephen Harper Government is giving away free science research to his blind business stakeholders. Since the Stephen Harper Government has basically put Canada “all-in” on tarsands, we already know which wheels will be the squeakiest in a failing bitumen market. More corporate welfare, “mission accomplished”?

Why should Canada be giving free corporate welfare to foreign companies and then see very poor returns on investment? With foreign corporations using temporary foreign workers, in Canada, what is the benefit of giving these resources away? Political power? No, it couldn't be that.

Coming from a government, that sees no value in the reality of evidence, decisions made regarding research in Canada will be equally short-sighted and most likely damaging. Does smaller government means funding private sector research? Seems like the American conservative ideology of “Smaller Government” means staying out of science, completely, please! Government shouldn't be dictating science and government shouldn't be betting on the dead horses. Let the free market kill dumb ideas, we see this trend with fossil fuels, now.

Science has given us understanding of gravity, evolution, neuroscience, medicine, cars, even the thingy you are reading this blog on. Should a 2-bit economist Harper Government mess with success? We already know that private systems inherently cost more and deliver less. This recycled and failed US conservative ideology has damaged America to the point of dysfunction. Does this matter? Nope, not to the 1% that profit from unregulated “trade secrets” and monopoly markets.

The reality is that government and science don't and shouldn't mix: one is based on fact, the other is based on, well, lets just say fiction. Florida wants to ban scientists from saying “climate change”, is this the smartest direction to take in a competitive global market? No.

Science research is the basis for our modern economy and many take for granted the technology they use each day. When I see a 4 year old operating an iPhone, I understand that they don't understand. I hope they ask “why?” some day and can get a real answer. Seems some think things just magically happen, but no, it took a lot of failures and successes to get to where we are today.

Taking this scientific progress for granted is very ignorant, but very common. Trust me, there is no more comical an exchange than one that uses the technology, that enables the exchange, while one party refutes the same technology that enables the discussion. Beyond ludicrous.

Another facet of ignorance is the economics of science-based technology, in Canada. In short, a great waste of Canadian taxpayers money. The Research and Development Tax Credit has delivered innovation for Canada. Science works, but, what happens to this investment after it is delivered to its industry stakeholder is far from a thing I would describe as working. Canadians investing public dollars only to have the results sold to a company at pennies on the dollar. A rip-off.

The R&D Tax Credit has failed Canada, on many dimensions. While delivering a core of value added research, it mostly leaves the biggest investor, the Canadian taxpayer, left holding a hot potato, while the company gets what it needs. Taking this failed model and building upon it, to service the corporate welfare model is the new science model in Canada. So companies get what they need, then eventually leave or cease operations. Just ask GM, Ford, etc. Why are corporations entitled to public money to do what they do?

The Canadian taxpayer initially funded the science research for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. This was initially a poor investment choice for the Canadian Government, since the company lacked the manufacturing technology to leverage this product to market, but since when has a poor decision stopped free money? The company eventually failed, as predicted, the technology that you and I paid for was bought by a US company for pennies & has been generating research jobs for the past 10 years, totally about $75,000,000. Also, when this product goes to market, the company will be generating profits, as it executes an intelligent technology roll-out, for 30-50 years totaling hundreds of billions of dollars. The US Military is now using this technology, so, when do we get a divided from this investment? Well, we got fleeced, eh!

Now, in Canada, a group of dumb companies are able to access world-class science to do more dumb things. What a dumb way to treat the science that made Canada a world leader. There is a long list of accomplishments I can cite, but here is a handy list for you that can help you understand the importance of making science a useful tool.

The wireless communication we have today is based upon Canadian science that was performed over 100 years ago. The electron microscope, the zipper, the G-Force suit, the list continues. If we look at the economic impacts of pure science research, we quickly see that politics has no place in critical thinking, making markets and delivering tomorrows economies. Let business take successful technology and apply it.

Ontario is currently a global centre of excellence in neuroscience. Do we need an ignorant conservative government messing this up? Lots of jobs, lots of success, lots of economic benefits. One can only imagine the future lobotomy of the Ontario science economy a conservative government will enact. It's happening in the US, Australia and the UK. Do conservatives forget what made us succeed? Yes.

The questions that science minds are asking don't require politics in the formula. When industry reaches out to academia to progress science, there is a reason for doing so. Science and industry having the freedom to choose how it operates is critical in a competitive global market. Forcing two groups “to dance” to produce science when only one group is required is adding complexity and red tape to something that worked very well. The reality is that industry and science we working just fine before Harper Government.

Having been in industry where the time differential between initial discovery to market implementation can be 10-50 years, folks in the know understand that science typically leads industry. For example, I was one of the first non-military designers, in the world, to use RFID in manufacturing, over 15 years ago. Recently, I saw another RFID innovation that can take this technology to economies of scaleIf you do your due diligence, this initial research was done, in 1945. So, 70 years later, we see that innovation to bring this technology to market, economically, takes some time, research and a lot of mistakes. Lots of expensive mistakes, mind you. Under Canada's current leadership, tomorrows economy doesn't belong to Canadians or the investments they make as tax payers.

Science quietly keeps working adding knowledge and understanding to our body of knowledge. When industry thinks it can innovate, based on new, or old, science, it can “shop around” and find the best solution to their challenge. If nothing exists, industry partnering with academia is quite common, these days.

Should science be forced to only research the topics that industry needs, right now? Does this make sense? Why are we burdening the mechanism that delivered modern society with having to find “economic” interest before proceeding with research? Seems like a higher risk to have said science research become successful. Is this a tool that favours the big dogs? I think it is.

Such big questions, but, given the Harper track record on pretty much all its policy, seems after we strip away the ~3500 layers of communications marketing, we typically find the same root cause: corporate welfare and entitlement. Why should the Canadian taxpayer help companies do their work? Should tax payers flip the bill for things that companies should be funding themselves? Seems Canada has been transformed into a pure mechanism of corporate welfare. Is that smart?

Why should NRC or CIHR be forced to stop asking the most important questions, of our times, to help tarsands companies, etc., improve upon a failed economic models? Why should health research science be forced to find an industry partner to support research? Upon first inspection the idea of teaming science and industry makes sense, but, should that be the only research model in Canada? No, for decades, science and industry has done perfectly well when it needed to answer its “why?”.

By limiting science with coupling this “discovery relationship” between scientists and corporations, the resultant odds of success is lesser than a system that is free to operate as it sees fit, when it needs “it”. When there is a relationship formed, is the scientist free to research, or is the corporation directing? Now we are adding another layer of management and complexity to the research / market process. This process may benefit large companies, while leaving unrecognized gems unpolished and forgotten. Perhaps that researcher will leave Canada to make billions, as some are now saying they will do. Canada becomes a loser, by default, less jobs, less technology, more stagnation.

Should corporations be directing science in Canada? Will one corporation sponsor research into tarsands cancer that can damage another corporations business model? Well, again, we start to see what is on the other side of this poor leadership ideology from Stephen Harper Government.

Smaller science? No thanks!

Enjoy!

Dawkins vs "God"

Dawkins vs Williams

I was so geeked to listen to this debate! I had this image of Dawkins finishing and ending up with a gold trophy, but, I listened.... yawn? Ya, but....

First, let me say that both parties failed to dazzle me with any “new stuff”. I have never seen Williams speak. To me, he seems like a kind and thoughtful man. Dawkins as well. Let me also say, that like Dawkins, I am also a Bright and a “cultural Anglican”.

It is refreshing to see a civilized discussion, because this was not a debate, in the classical sense. It was an interesting discussion. Dawkins spoke well, but I think his “condensed knowledge” sailed 45 degrees above the head of Kenny, the moderator, and twice as far above Williams. Language. Science. Let the semantics begin!

“In the beginning”, they spoke of communication. Williams suggests humans as unique “language users”; my first “bump” in the debate. I think of humans as unique users of science. Many animals use language for communication just as humans still use body language. Wolves and birds speak, obviously less complex compared to humans, but still it is communication. Humans use spoken language an order of complexity larger than most critters and we have the dictionaries to prove it. But, a male dog can tell when a female is “interested” while she is no where to be seen: natures own Blackberry? For the record, I hypothesize that language evolved from one of these three things: “danger/help”, “I want to make sexy time”, or “We need food”.

The moderator and self-declared “ignoramus”, Kenny, chopped the debate into four parts: the nature of human beings, the origin of human beings, the origin of life on earth, and the origin of the universe. 88 minutes, no problem!

The nature of humans beings

Williams notes that science has “failed” to provide a “theory of conscious”, while providing no proof to support his assertion that consciousness is not a physical entity. Dawkins says that the origin of consciousness started in animal brains. Last year, I wrote a fun blog about this.

Origin of the human species

Both men agree the theory of evolution defines the origin of humans. Williams asserts that God gave conscious knowledge of God to homo sapiens. Dawkins asserts that there was no “Poof” moment: that human conscious was a gradual evolution. Williams also supports that there was no “first human”. No Adam? It is refreshing to listen to an intelligent religious person. Dawkins asserts self awareness did not start with humans.

Origin of life on earth

Kenny threw this topic at Dawkins since we all know the religious assertion. Dawkins discusses improbability of life starting on earth versus life starting elsewhere ( or the building blocks thereof ) and continues to explain pre-genetic replication. Williams provides little input to the discussion. Seems that Craig Venter would have been a good “pinch-speaker” since his company CVI has created synthetic life many times in the past few years.

Origin of the universe

Dawkins asks why theologians are not captivated by the ability of science to describe and define our universe and why “they revert to a messy god” to explain it. William goes on to compliment Dawkins on his captivating writing skill. Dawkins reflects upon the scientific “confidence” gained by Darwin and how that should focus theologians on 21st century science, not ancient and incomplete scripture.

The debate ended with the Oxford Chancellor thanking the three men and of course some shameless touting of Oxford University.

After listening to both sides I would have to give it to Richard Dawkins. I did feel that some of his responses were very complex, and perhaps lost on some, but provided a unique perspective on the topics. Williams, an intelligent man, seemed to miss some opportunities to provide a more definitive answer to provide clarity of reason with regards to the science provided by Dawkins.

With “thousands of years of experience”, both science and religion has been used to answer some big questions and shared knowledge. Since the recent advent of complex math and natural systems analysis science keeps adding to its knowledge base and wisdom. Its growth rate is exponential and provides theory. The body of knowledge of science is staggeringly huge and reliable.

Religion seems to be dying in society today. I guess I should qualify that, “religion as fact” is dying. But one must also accept that religion is part of our evolutionary story in our relentless passion to describe our world. Religion represents the tool of "why", to me. Humanities first steps into a unique place in our universe: understanding what the universe is and not simply existing in it.

If you have the time check it out, and when you have, I have a question for you: If science can be discovered naturally, can religion?

Enjoy!

Strange Sounds

Have you heard them? I have and they smell bad*.

Does our current government base its policy on #Voodoo or #Science? Sounds like a strange question, but, seems like Harper hates the “sounds of science”. Is the CPC party the first to exploit the legal loophole that says nothing about tangible “Science vs. Fiction”? Seems Harper asserts that science sounds strange to his supporters? Evidence of ignorance or just a stupid coincidence?

Minister Vic Toews asserts information aqcuired through torture is reliable intelligence?

Minister Rob Nicholson asserts rehabilitation is best served by mental abuse & physical punishment?

Minister Joe Oliver will not recognize scientific consensus on climate change? ( Finally the CPC is forced to cough up an unscientific statement: "humans cause global warming" )

Minister Peter Kent maintains less science about nature protects Canadians?

See a trend? Need a chart?

I am not an expert in psychology, but, I do know enough to draw an evidence-based and educated hypothesis. Better yet, why not just trust the peer reviewed science of professional experts?

Leadership should reinforce or define cultural morality, when required, otherwise get back to creating jobs and protecting citizens. Jobs: remember what Stephen was talking about? Perhaps he can look south to Barack for leadership skills and communication. Is Harper capable of moving Canada forward or are we the next victim of the "conservative U-turn back to better times of racism and sexism"?

To understand these “strange sounds”, one must find the source. Seems the CPC party is a "beachhead for the failed hand-me-down policies" of the American Republican Party. Smells Bushie.

It is comical to see many discussing new studies showing conservatives are “less intelligent, lower IQ, etc.”. That is an unfair assertion, although intuition supports evidence and it “feels” right, it is still truthiness until published peer reviewed science stands the rigours of the scientific method. To make these assumptions is unreliable. Don't be a lemming too.

I know many conservatives that refute this Harper Government. They trust in science, not politics, and so should you:

Agnotology: (formerly agnatology) is the study of culturally-induced ignorance or doubt, particularly the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data.

So, why is Harper in contempt of Science? Trust me, he is not smart enough to "cook this stuff up". Science is under attack in the United States. Republicans think that by twisting science, they can continue to “maintain the freedom” to ravage this planet and its people no matter the cost to society.

Are they redefining “freedom”? Why adhere to law and science when you can change the definitions of words. Much like the new CPC narrative on abortion. Seeking refuge in ancient words and laws that support an ideology. Why not look at the latest science for all definitions? Will Harper look to the Magna Carta to justify his discrimination against some groups? Will he refer to the bible to influence current law?

Check your science carefully folks: Give it the sniff test! Is the next phase of “CPC Agnotology” fake peer reviewed “bullshit”? The GOP republicans and CPC conservatives know that they are failing to succeed with ideology, so, is the next step is to put on the “SunTV lab coats (brought to you by FoxNews)” and do some “dog and pony science” for the masses? Perhaps Ezra will finally exchange his "heavy carbon footprint chainsaw for a more efficient and intelligent pen"? Watch for more the new "science parrot" to replace CPC "bullshit"?

It is 2012; Science, in the past 20 years has cleared out a lot of "Kenty" science, but there is much to be done. By eliminating government based science, seems our government expects us to trust corporate science: Tobacco science? Ethical science? FDA Science?

We should thank new math! Should we thank Harold Coxter? No, lets thank a government that produces and supports true science. Lets keep things "straight", I mean scientific.

“My freedom ends where your freedom begins”. Label me ignorant, but I believe this. I think it is an important statement regarding my human rights. I assert that I have the right to know what is fact and what is fiction. Can Tom Flaherty scientifically quantify the term "Radical" and "Enemy of the State"?

Law seems to respect spoken word and evidence. Although law fails to provide a quality system; innocent people charged as guilty. Some are guilty people being treated inhumanely and perhaps damaged further.

Seems science has answers and our justice system just has issues, yet, a noble purpose. Can science & law unite into the super hero that will snatch up people like Stephen Harper and fly them to the Queen for a stiff and firm spanking? Naughty Stephen, naughty! Is parental spanking the best solution?

"Violence breeds violence" - me (If someone else said it, well, good for them, this is not new stuff ).

“Lead by example”. Label me ignorant, but I believe this. People learn both consciously and unconsciously through our senses (ok, some of this stuff is pre-programmed, like that button on your remote, when you press it, the TV turns on)*. If our leadership led by example and maintained honest morality through their policy of "peace, love and happiness", would there be a deviation from "war, hate and sadness"?

“Monkey see, monkey do” is another way to say it. So, if a government thinks the death penalty is warranted behaviour, is that not also unconsciously teaching people that killing is accepted behaviour? Does the government think that the death penalty stops crime? Has Harper studied Texas lately? I wonder if Rick Perry has killed innocent people (WARNING: 100% Fox News Content); now, that sounds like Conservative American values. Can Rick prove he did not kill innocent people?

The logic seems tricky. What if a rational 18 year old person understood the possibility of life in prison with no parole? Would that stop them from murdering their female friends, by drowning them in a car (Another tricky question since rational people do not kill their friends)? Rational people do not kill innocent people, but rational people would kill an irrational person if they were going to kill them.

So, do all “rational” people think that everyone is “rational”? Can we trust selling handguns, rifles, shotguns and para-military style weapons to a "rational Canadian market" expecting everyone to be "rational" with those guns?

What if a rational person dies and leaves their gun collection to irrational offspring?

I admit I am greedy, its all about me: My freedom ends where your freedom begins, ergo, to protect my freedom I must help secure yours first. Can Canada secure its science from these "strange sounds"?

Enjoy

* - notice that CTV ends segment and indirectly questions the validity of science?

MONKEY off my back

Late Summer Product Design Musings: a Dragons Den auto-#Fail.

Project: MONKEY off my back.

Objective: Um, charge "road monkeys" to reduce my taxes and fix roads.

Seems I have always had this blog in me? I hate monkey drivers. Some monkeys are manageable, some not. The highways are clogged with too much testosterone? Or is it non-gender specific attitude? Who cares, these people cause accidents and worse, hurt others.

In science, one could say the monkey with the most momentum is the worst kind. Dynamics is funny, its non-linear. Ignoring the complexity of kinematics and dynamics on the highway can lead to vehicular manslaughter. In english: we need smarter drivers and smarter highways and make them safer.

Why? Because these monkeys cause accidents. Sure there is MADD, but, what about MONKEY: Managing Outrageous Numbskull Kineticist Eh? Ya! ( MONKE?Y! ?). Lets face it, some of these cars are too much speed ( say E500 AMG ) or too much momentum ( Ford Excursion : Fat Guy Edition ).

Can we start MONKEY? Yes. We can. We have the tools!

See inside our cars is a thingy called a computer. Of course it already is a black box of sorts. Insurance companies like them: they can deconstruct dynamics data and simulate the crash. GM cars can be shut down by satelite. I like that. So, lets record each cars position and velocity and presto! Boom! Done! MONKEY time!

If you feel you see a MONKEY, communicate it. If they test MONKEY “POSITIVE”, you get 10% of the fine, if you are wrong, you get a spanking. Of course I want a hard speed limit of 115 km/hr. Just make it Pan-Canada. Like photo radar, but with a new satellite built by MDA!

So, MONKEY, in the Oversized Black FORD F-350 Powerstroke 8” off my bumper, take that! Driving 160 km/h? Blammo, no license for you!

Neat idea huh? Well, how about this: now leverage the computer and companies can monitor all its corporate vehicles. Governments and even the city of Toronto!

Seems that some city drivers are driving like they stole it. Leverage again and you can manage fleet performance to save gas. Leverage it more and charge over-consumption drivers a carbon tax ( call it the Jack Rabbit Tax: have it fund Healthcare to piss them off ).

End result: reduce my car insurance and taxes, thanks, and make the MONKEY pay.

Seriously, I hate those MONKEYS!

Enjoy!

Enjoy MORE HERE!

Ousting Harper: Planned Parliamenthood

Ousting Harper: Planned Parliamenthood

The voting system in Canada does not seem to represent “the peoples vote”. There has been lots of talk about reforming this system to better reflect the sentiment of the Canadian voter. The reality is our political landscape is a well trodden chessboard that parties can manipulate to gain power. Stand tall on a few key squares and poof, the other squares do not matter. Is this fair? Who cares!

Last election, the Green Party got 10% of the vote, but, did not win one seat. This is the reality of our system and I feel that it discourages youth voters and also forces people to vote strategically – ABC ( anything but conservative ) but, to be fair, I currently support ABH, anything but Harper. I know many well rounded conservatives and most are not happy with King Stevie. Teamwork can help us all extract this anomaly in Canadian Democracy ( more like US bipartisan right wing GOP ).

There are many systems of voting models, but reality is we have the same tired system for this election on May 2, 2011. In my limited voting knowledge experience, I have seen these: Proportional Representation and Ranked Ballot. Will Canada switch its system? Who cares, for now.

What I care about is May 2nd. That is when we need to vote "ABH". CPC "lemmings" did the fear mongering dance with their coalition talking point, but forgot about the word “cheating” with vote swapping. Conservatives don't talk about this, for good reason.

Vote swapping has been around for a while. Nothing new, but what is new is Twitter. What is also new is the need for Canadians to eliminate the CPC "hidden agenda" methods and its corrupt and ethically-challenged methods in parliament. I do not trust Harper. Do you? This I care about!

I care that Harper is eroding the humanitarian leadership and peacekeeping image of Canada. Cutting efforts and progress in the environment and human rights. Operating with disregard of democratic transparency and contempt of parliament. No thanks! Time to change the bathwater in Ottawa.

So, with twitter, Canada can “cheat” the system: I call it “Planned Parliamenthood” : Vote Swapping.

Bigger cities have the luxury of having both strong Liberal and New Democrat, in some ridings, with very weak Conservative representation. I laughingly refer to it as “intelligence and cultural diversity”. So, in these ridings, we have surplus “Anti-Harper” potential, just waiting to be lovingly spread around Canada like our spring time fertilizer. Lets grow our democracy again!

My plan is to get Elizabeth May a seat using this idea. Not by voting for the Green Party, no. By swapping my vote with someone that wants Liberal or New Democratic. They vote green for me, I vote Liberal or NDP for them. Swappo! Mission Accomplished.

In the 2008 election, 6000 people registered for vote sharing or vote swapping. This is significant since “they” say 20,000 votes can swing a party into power.

Vote sharing requires some homework. So, if you think you can better oust Harper, or oust Harper and elect Elizabeth May ( some are doing this in protest, and my higher-order democracy option ), read through the sites and do your own homework.

Oh ya, remember Elections Canada recognizes swap voting, thus, use it with pride!

On May 2nd, lets oust Harper!

Enjoy!
